The architectural legacies in Hampi, Lepakshi, etc., depict the grandeur of the rule of Sri Krishnadevaraya. Isn't it interesting to know the birth place of such a great King of South India? Yes, Devikapuram in Tiruvannamalai, is believed to be the birthplace of the great King Sri Krishnadevaraya.

Devikapuram in Tamil Nadu with its rich history and legends, makes it an interesting place to visit. It is not only known for these age-old temples but also silk sarees (Arni & Kanchipuram silk).

Devikapuram is famous for silk saree industry. Infact, saree production industry forms one of the prominent occupations of Devikapuram as half of the population is dependent on this industry.

The town of Devikapuram is named after the Goddess Periyanayagi Amman whose temple is located amidst the town. This historic town is also known for Sri Kanakagirishwarar Temple located on top of the hill.

Periyanayagi Amman Temple

Periyanayagi Amman Temple is said to be the second largest temple in Tiruvannamalai. Here Goddess Parvati is worshipped in the form of Periyanayagi Amman whereas her consort Shiva is worshipped as Kanakagirishwarar in the hill temple near to Devikapuram.

The Periyanayagi Amman Temple was built during the reign of Vijayanagara Empire in 14th century. The Goddess Periyanayagi Amman is also called as Sri Brihadambike and Sri Brahadhambal.

This large temple premises is built inside an old fortress which was built to protect the shrine from the Muslim invaders. The Periyanayagi Amman Temple has a huge gopura and a vast temple complex; there are many shrines and theerthams within this complex. There are also many inscriptions found at the Periyanayagi Amman Temple indicating the rule of Vijayanagara Empire.

So, Periyanayagi Amman Temple is one of the most important shrines in Devikapuram.

Kanakagiriswarar Temple

Kanakagiriswarar is said to be the consort of Periyanayagi Amman. Here Lord Shiva is worshipped as Kanakagiriswarar and it is one of the main temples of Devikapuram. The temple is a hill temple, which was also built during the time of Vijayanagara Empire. Interestingly, the inner sanctum has two Shiva Lingams and they are said to be self-manifested deities. So, both Periyanayagi Amman Temple and Kanakagiriswarar Temple are the prominent historic attractions in Devikapuram.

So, the historic town of Devikapuram is a holy town with more than 1000 years old temples. This birthplace of the Vijayanagara King Sri Krishnadevaraya will be an interesting visit.
