The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted to the imminent formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal by December 7, which is poised to usher in substantial rainfall across various districts in Tamil Nadu. This development comes alongside reports of atmospheric circulation over the Southwest Sea and the adjacent Southeast Arabian Sea, as well as a newly formed atmospheric low circulation over the Indian Ocean, near the Southeast Bay of Bengal as of December 6. This system is anticipated to intensify and shift towards the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coastline by December 12, setting the stage for significant weather changes in the region.

With this weather system's progression, Tamil Nadu, alongside Puducherry and Karaikal, is set to experience light to moderate rainfall, peppered with thunder and lightning, until December 10. This forecast notably includes coastal areas and a few inland regions, where the intensity of rainfall is expected to escalate by December 11. Particularly, districts such as Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, and Ramanathapuram, in addition to Karaikal, are bracing for heavy showers.
Chennai Braces for Weather Changes
For residents of Chennai and its neighboring locales, the forecast predicts partly cloudy skies over the next 24 hours, with potential light fog in the morning. As the day progresses, there's a chance of light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, primarily during the evening or nighttime. Temperature-wise, the city can expect daytime highs of 31-32 degrees Celsius, while nighttime lows are likely to hover around 25 degrees.
Caution for Coastal Fishermen
In light of these predictions, the IMD has issued a caution for fishermen operating in the southern regions of the Southeast Bay of Bengal. They are warned of cyclonic winds, reaching speeds between 35-45 km/h, and gusting up to 55 km/h. Fishermen are strongly advised against venturing into these turbulent waters on December 7, underlining the potential risks posed by the evolving weather conditions.
As the situation develops, particularly on December 12, certain areas such as Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Puducherry, and Karaikal, are forecasted to witness heavy rainfall at isolated spots, signaling a need for preparedness among the affected communities.
This weather warning comes shortly after the region braced for rainfall due to Cyclone Fengal, underscoring the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of weather patterns in the Bay of Bengal and its impact on Tamil Nadu and its vicinity.
The coming days are critical for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, as they brace for the impact of the forecasted weather conditions. With the IMD's alerts, the aim is to mitigate any potential damage by ensuring timely precautions are taken, especially among the fishing communities and in districts anticipated to receive the heaviest downpours.
