The Vande Metro, a metro variant of the well-known Vande Bharat trains, is set to begin commercial operations soon. This new service, designed for shorter routes and standing passengers, aims to replace the current Mainline Multiple Electric Units (MEMUs).
The trial run for the Vande Metro between Chennai and Katpadi is scheduled for today, August 3. The Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) will be onboard to oversee the trial, which will take place between Chennai Beach and Katpadi Junction.
Chennai Vande Metro Features
The prototype of the Vande Metro, recently launched from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), is fully air-conditioned and can reach speeds up to 130 km/h. It includes modern amenities such as automatic doors, improved toilet facilities, and an infotainment system to ensure a pleasant journey for commuters.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed concerns about the introduction of Vande Bharat trains replacing existing services. He clarified that as of July 29, there are 102 Vande Bharat train services operating across Indian Railways on a Broad Gauge (B.G.) electrified network.
Chennai Vande Metro Trial Run Schedule
The trial run will start at 9:30 am from Chennai Beach Station. The train will reach Villivakkam at 10:10 am for officers to board. After a brief stop, it will continue towards Katpadi at 10:15 am, arriving at 11:55 am. The return journey from Katpadi will begin at 12:15 pm, with an expected arrival back at Chennai Beach by 2 pm.
