As the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is one of the most popular and exciting events in Kerala, the 72nd edition is aiming to attract more than 2 lakh spectators. The event is held every year in Alappuzha and attracts thousands of visitors from Kerala and other parts of India.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race 2026: Venue & Boat Race Route
Punnamada Lake, located near Alappuzha town, is part of the larger Vembanad backwater network. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is held on a nearly 1,400-metre straight course between Punnamada Jetty and the Nehru Pavilion. The pavilion, situated on a small island, serves as the main viewing area and hosts the trophy ceremony.
The race day features several traditional boat categories. The main attraction is the Chundan Vallam, or snake boat, which can be more than 100 feet long and carry over 100 rowers. Other categories include Churulan Vallam, Iruttukuthy Vallam, Odi Vallam, Veppu Vallam, Vadakkanody Vallam and Kochu Vallam.
How to Reach Punnamada?
By Air: The nearest major airport is Cochin International Airport, located around 80 km from Alappuzha. From the airport, visitors can take a taxi or bus to reach the city.
By Train: Alappuzha Railway Station is the nearest railway station and is well connected with major cities in Kerala and other parts of India. From the station, taxis and local buses are available to reach Punnamada.
By Road: Alappuzha is connected by road with Kochi, Kottayam, Kollam and other major cities. Visitors can use buses, taxis or private vehicles to reach the venue.
During the boat race, roads around Punnamada can become crowded. It is therefore advisable to arrive at the venue early and plan your journey.
