Western Railway Halts Goregaon–CSMT Local Trains for 3 Months to Reconstruct Bandra–Khar Bridge in Mumbai

Western Railway has announced that local train services between Goregaon and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) will be suspended for three months. This decision will affect a busy suburban rail corridor that currently runs 88 local trains every day and is used by lakhs of commuters. According to sources, the suspension is needed to demolish and rebuild the Bandra-Khar railway bridge.

Bridge Reconstruction

The bridge reconstruction is an important part of Western Railway's plan to add fifth and sixth railway lines between Mumbai Central and Borivali. This expansion project aims to increase train capacity, improve efficiency, and reduce overcrowding on the suburban network. Initially, the railways had planned to block services for six months, but the duration was later reduced to three months to minimise inconvenience to passengers.

Metro Commuters Faced Disruption

This is not the first time commuters have faced disruptions due to this project. Earlier, between December and January, work on the fifth and sixth lines between Kandivali and Borivali resulted in the cancellation of around 200 to 250 local trains every day for nearly a month. Now that this phase has been completed, construction has moved to the more challenging Goregaon-CSMT stretch.

Local Train Services

However, there is some relief for daily travellers. Local train services between Bandra and CSMT will continue to operate as usual, since the fifth and sixth lines between Bandra and Borivali have already been completed. The entire Western Railway expansion project has been approved at an estimated cost of ₹964.84 crore. Currently, 88 local trains run between Goregaon and CSMT, while 106 services operate between Bandra and CSMT.

During the shutdown, commuters from Goregaon and nearby stations have been advised to take Churchgate-bound Western Line trains or use road transport to reach Bandra. From Bandra, they can switch to Harbour Line or Central Railway services to continue their journey.
