The announcement was made in the Budget presented on June 19, 2026, by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. The Budget included several development projects for Kozhikode, and the Light Metro was one of the major highlights.

The Chief Minister said that both the Thiruvananthapuram Light Metro and Kozhikode Light Metro projects would be implemented. He said that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Thiruvananthapuram project is already being prepared. For Kozhikode, the government will now speed up the feasibility study. To support the work related to the Kozhikode Light Metro, the Budget has allocated ₹20 crore.

What's More Included in the Budget?

Apart from the metro project, the Budget also announced a special package for Vilangad village in Kozhikode district, which was badly affected by a landslide in 2024. The package is meant to rebuild damaged infrastructure, help affected families, revive farming, and improve disaster preparedness. The government has set aside ₹5 crore for this purpose.

The Budget also proposed a cultural park in Kozhikode in memory of the famous writer and Jnanpith award winner M.T. Vasudevan Nair. This project has been given ₹50 crore.

Another important announcement concerned Calicut International Airport. The airport has been included in a proposed aviation-logistics hub project along with three other airports in Kerala. The government has earmarked ₹200 crore for preliminary work on this larger project. In addition, ₹1 crore has been allocated for a feasibility study to build an elevated highway from Kohinoor in Malappuram to Calicut airport, which could help reduce traffic congestion on that route.

The Budget also plans to upgrade Cyberpark Kozhikode to the level of Infopark Kochi and Technopark Thiruvananthapuram. It has also proposed a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority for Kozhikode to improve the city's transport system.
Business groups and local leaders have welcomed the Budget, saying it gives Kozhikode a strong development push despite Kerala's financial challenges.
