Taking a noteworthy step towards improving passenger convenience, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has issued a crucial directive to all seven major Indian airlines. Effective from February 26, this instruction mandates the timely delivery of baggage to passengers within 30 minutes of landing. Leading carriers, such as Air India, Indigo, Akasa, SpiceJet, Vistara, AIX Connect, and Air India Express, are expected to adhere to this directive.

The decision follows BCAS closely monitoring the time taken for baggage arrival at six major airports across the country - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru - throughout January. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia provided the directive to address concerns about baggage delivery efficiency.
The civil aviation ministry highlighted that, despite improvements observed during the weekly performance monitoring of all airlines, the current levels still fall short of the mandated standards. According to the mandates, the first baggage must reach the baggage belt within 10 minutes of the aircraft engine being shut off, and the last bag within 30 minutes of the same.

"While the performance monitoring is ongoing at the six major airports, BCAS has directed the airlines to ensure that the mandated levels are achieved in all airports they serve," stated the civil aviation ministry.
These directives are part of the Operation, Management, and Delivery Agreement (OMDA) signed between the Airports Authority of India and major airports like Delhi and Mumbai during the privatization process approximately two decades ago.
As of now, the BCAS continues to monitor the compliance of airlines with the baggage delivery time requirements at the six major airports mentioned earlier.
This move is anticipated to significantly enhance the overall passenger experience, ensuring that travelers receive their baggage promptly after landing. The directive is in line with the ongoing efforts to streamline and improve various aspects of aviation services in the country.
The aviation regulator's decision reflects a commitment to passenger-centric policies, acknowledging the importance of timely baggage delivery in the overall travel experience. With the implementation deadline just around the corner, passengers can expect a more efficient and timely baggage retrieval process across airports served by these airlines.
The BCAS's directive serves as a positive step towards reinforcing the aviation sector's commitment to passenger satisfaction. As we approach the implementation date, passengers can look forward to a more streamlined and punctual baggage delivery process, making air travel a smoother experience for all.
