Many MTC bus commuters along Arcot Road are struggling without proper shelters and are forced to stand under the under-construction Chennai Metro pillars to escape the harsh weather conditions. This issue is mostly at the Vadapalani bus stop and another stop near the Ambedkar statue, both of which lack permanent

or temporary shelters. These stops are busy points for passengers traveling to places like Broadway, T Nagar, and Thiruvanmiyur, or for those taking buses via Anna Salai. However, with ongoing metro construction for the Poonamallee-Light House corridor, commuters now stand in the middle of the one-way road beneath the pillars, creating a risky situation.
Commuters Opinions
A commuter, K. Shanthakumar, who recently took the 72-route bus to T Nagar, said that the earlier temporary bus shelter has disappeared. "Standing under the pillars is dangerous. Buses coming from 100 Feet Road turn sharply onto Arcot Road, and because of the pillars, drivers can't clearly see the passengers waiting," he said.
Commuters also complain about "bus bunching," where three or four buses on the same route arrive together during rush hours. "There isn't enough space for many buses to stop. Some buses move on without halting, while others stop far away, making it difficult for people to board. There are also no boards or signage," said S. Sundaraman, another regular passenger.
Important Routes to Pass Through the Stretch
Several important routes, including 26B, 11M, 26M, and 72, pass through this stretch, making the need for proper facilities urgent. Kodambakkam zonal officer Venkatesh, who recently took charge, said he was aware of the problem. "I will visit the location tomorrow and ensure shelters are built soon," he assured. Commuters hope authorities act quickly to provide safe and comfortable waiting spaces along this busy route.
