Uber has launched a unique service in Srinagar, allowing both tourists and locals to book shikara rides on Dal Lake through its app. This marks Uber's first venture into water transport in India and the first such service in Asia. By combining modern technology with Kashmir's traditional shikara rides, Uber aims to provide a seamless and enhanced experience for visitors to the scenic Dal Lake.

A Blend of Technology and Tradition
The introduction of Uber Shikara highlights the company's commitment to promoting tourism in Kashmir while preserving its rich cultural heritage. Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, shared his excitement about the launch:
"Uber Shikara is our humble attempt to blend technology and tradition to give a seamless experience to travellers for their shikara ride. We are proud to create this iconic experience enhancing accessibility and uplifting tourism in the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir."

This service not only reflects Uber's innovative approach but also shows its dedication to supporting the local economy and creating memorable experiences for its users.
Expanding the Fleet
Uber Shikara has started with seven shikaras on its platform and plans to expand based on demand. Tourists can book shikara rides at fixed rates, eliminating the need for bargaining. The rides are available from 10 am to 5 pm, offering an hour-long experience for up to four passengers starting from Shikara Ghat No. 16.

An Uber spokesperson confirmed that the company will not charge any fees from its shikara partners, ensuring that the entire fare goes to the operators. This policy demonstrates Uber's commitment to supporting local businesses. Additionally, rides can be booked up to 12 hours in advance and as early as 15 days before the intended date, offering users flexibility and convenience.
Supporting Local Operators
The Shikara Owners Association, led by President Wali Mohammad Bhatt, has welcomed Uber's new initiative. With around 4,000 shikaras operating on Dal Lake, Bhatt expects more operators to join Uber's platform.
"This service will boost shikara operators' business as the app will offer fixed rates and end bargaining, which benefits tourists. The assured income will attract more operators to join Uber," Bhatt explained.

A Boost for Kashmir's Tourism
Uber's new service builds on its existing cab service in Srinagar, showcasing the company's versatility and willingness to explore innovative ideas. By integrating traditional shikara rides with its technology, Uber aims to improve the tourism experience in Kashmir.
This initiative not only enhances the convenience of booking shikara rides but also promotes cultural heritage while supporting the local economy. As the service grows in popularity, it is likely to become a key feature of Kashmir's tourism, benefiting both visitors and local operators.
