Southern Railway is making train journeys faster starting January 1, 2026, by updating its schedules and improving tracks. About 65 Mail, Express, and Superfast trains will run quicker under the new timetable, helping passengers reach their destinations sooner.

Railway Upgrades
The railway upgrades include doubling 300 km of railway lines, electrifying single-line sections, and strengthening tracks, which allows trains to run at higher speeds, up to about 110 km/h on many routes. These improvements are the result of work done over the past few years.
Changes in Timings
Because of these changes, several important trains will save significant travel time. For example, the Nagercoil-Tambaram Express will reach its destination 50 minutes earlier, while the Kollam-Tambaram Express could save up to 85 minutes. Other trains like the Coimbatore-Rameswaram Weekly Express and the Cuddalore Port-Mysuru Express will also arrive around 50-55 minutes sooner, and the Rameswaram-Tirupati Express will cut off about 25 minutes.
How Will it Benefit Passengers?
Many other services will also benefit. Some long-distance trains will be sped up by 20-45 minutes, and several local passenger trains will get shorter travel times too. Because of the changes, the departure and arrival times of several trains from key stations like Chennai Central, Egmore, and Tambaram have been revised.
Faster Travel
Officials say passengers will enjoy faster travel and better reliability due to track enhancements, electrification work, and improved signalling across Southern Railway's network. Additional reductions in journey times may happen in the future as more upgrades continue.
