On April 23, a new chapter in Sikkim's motorsport journey began with the launch of the first-ever Mountain Rush - Sikkim Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) Car Rally. The rally started at Ridge Park in Gangtok and aims to combine adventure, competition, and celebration. It also marks the 50th Anniversary of Sikkim's statehood and highlights the spirit of the people and the beauty of the region.
Organized with strong support
The rally is being organized by Summit Times in collaboration with Service to Mankind and the Information & Public Relations Department (IPRD) of the Sikkim Government. It is also supported by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), which adds national-level recognition to the event.
Government officials like Anapurna Alley, Secretary of IPRD, and Umesh Sunam, Director of IPRD, attended the event, along with members of the organizing committee and motorsport experts. Their presence shows how important the event is for the state's sports and tourism future.
What is a TSD Rally?
This is a Time-Speed-Distance rally, which is not about racing fast but about maintaining accurate speed and time while following a set route. The route is provided in a special document called a "Tulip", which includes symbols and maps to help drivers stay on course. This format tests the skill, accuracy, and coordination of the drivers and navigators, rather than just speed.
A beautiful route and local impact
A total of 32 cars lined up for the rally's flag-off. The first leg of the rally heads to Lachung, a peaceful village known for its natural beauty and stunning views. By taking the rally to such remote locations, the event also supports rural tourism, giving a boost to homestays and helping the local economy.
The Mountain Rush rally is more than a motorsport event-it is a celebration of 50 years of Sikkim being part of India. It connects people through a shared love for driving, nature, and adventure. The event also places Sikkim on the national motorsport map and brings more attention to its tourism potential.
