Mumbai's suburban railway is bringing in 26 new air-conditioned (AC) local train services starting on Republic Day, January 26, 2026, to give commuters a cooler and more comfortable journey. These trains will run on both Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) lines in the city's local train network.

Central Railway Routes
Out of the 26 new AC services, 14 will be on the Central Railway routes, mainly on the Harbour Line from CSMT to Panvel, and 12 will be on the Western Railway routes. The Central Railway plans show that AC locals will operate both in the morning and evening, helping people travelling to work or college. The Western Railway's additional 12 services will be split evenly in both directions on busy suburban sections.
AC Local Trains
These AC local trains are being introduced by replacing certain existing non-AC 12-car services, so the total number of trains in the suburban network stays roughly the same, even though more AC trains are available. The number of AC services on Western Railway will rise from 109 to 121, and on Central Railway, the number of AC services is 94.
What is the Idea Behind it?
The idea behind this move is to reduce crowding in ordinary locals and offer travellers a cooler, more comfortable ride, especially during hot weather when many commuters prefer AC coaches. This is important because Mumbai's local trains carry millions of passengers every day and are often very crowded.
Moreover, the introduction of these extra AC train services from Republic Day is meant to make daily travel better for people using Mumbai's busy local railway system. The new schedule will take effect from January 26, 2026, and commuters will have more AC options on key suburban routes.
