Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro to Launch in March 2026, Slashing Pune Commute from 2 Hours to 30 Minutes

Pune residents are likely to see improvement in their daily travel once the Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar metro line begins operations in March 2026. This will be India's first metro project built under a public-private partnership model. The new line is expected to reduce travel time between Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar from nearly two hours to about 30 minutes, offering major relief from traffic congestion, especially for IT professionals.

Completion of Successful Trial Runs

Reports say the metro line has already completed two successful trial runs. Senior officials, including Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase, have inspected the project and confirmed that work is moving as planned and the line is on schedule for its March 2026 launch.

Direct Connection Between Shivajinagar

The metro will provide a direct connection between Shivajinagar, located in the heart of the city, and the Rajiv Gandhi IT Park in Hinjawadi. This will give commuters a faster and more dependable option compared to busy roads. More than 2.2 lakh employees working in over 800 IT and related companies are expected to benefit from the service.

Highlights of the Metro Project

One of the key highlights of the project is its triple-level infrastructure at Vidyapeeth Chowk, designed to manage heavy traffic efficiently. At the ground level, regular city roads will handle local traffic. Above that, a flyover will allow vehicles to move quickly without interruptions. On the top level, metro trains will run smoothly on dedicated tracks. This design aims to reduce bottlenecks in one of Pune's busiest junctions.

Metro Line with Well-Equipped Stations

The metro line will have 23 well-equipped stations and will operate with 14 modern trainsets. Traffic problems in Hinjawadi had become so severe that some IT companies were thinking about shifting operations elsewhere. The new metro is expected to save time, reduce stress, and help Pune retain its IT workforce, strengthening its position as a major technology hub.

Pune Metro Project

The project is important as Pune continues to rank among the world's most congested cities. According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2025, Pune has an average traffic speed of just 18 kmph, making it the fifth most congested city globally. Moreover, Mumbai ranks 18th with a higher average speed of 20.8 kmph.
