Pune Metro Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Line to Start Commercial Operations Very Soon

Pune Metro Line 3, one of the city's most-awaited infrastructure projects, is now close to starting commercial operations. The metro corridor, which connects Hinjawadi IT Park with Shivajinagar, is expected to improve travel for thousands of daily commuters, especially IT professionals who face heavy traffic on this route. The project is being developed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

The 23.2-km-long elevated metro line has 23 stations and is India's first metro project being implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The corridor is designed to provide a faster, safer, and more environmentally friendly mode of transport while reducing traffic congestion on Pune's busy roads.

Successful Trial Runs

A major milestone was achieved when successful trial runs were conducted on the route. Officials have stated that most of the construction work has already been completed, with only finishing work, safety inspections, and final approvals remaining before passenger services begin. Testing of signalling systems, power supply, braking mechanisms, and other safety features has also been carried out successfully.

Pune Metro Line to Open in Phases

The metro line is expected to be opened in phases. The first phase will include around 12 stations, connecting the Hinjawadi side to Baner, while work on the remaining stations continues. Authorities are aiming to launch the initial section soon, with the complete corridor becoming operational later. Final approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is still required before commercial services can start.

How will this Line Benefit Passengers?

Once fully operational, Metro Line 3 is expected to benefit more than four lakh passengers every day. It will provide a reliable alternative to road travel, reduce fuel consumption, cut pollution levels, and improve connectivity between Pune's IT hub and the city centre. The project is also expected to strengthen Pune's growing metro network and support the city's future transportation needs.
