The opening of the Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi metro line in Pune has been delayed once again, even though Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had asked officials to start operations by May 1. The deadline has been missed because several parts of the project are still incomplete. According to recent reports, the metro

may now begin running from June 15, and that too in two phases.
Pune Metro Line Opening Date Delayed
Originally, the metro line was expected to open in March 2025. However, the project has faced multiple delays, with deadlines shifting from September 2025 to December 2025, then March 2026, May 2026, and now June 2026. These repeated postponements have been caused by construction delays and technical issues.
Pune Metro Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi Corridor
The metro corridor is 23 km long and includes 23 stations. It is an important route as it connects Hinjawadi, a major IT hub, with central parts of Pune. The project is being built under a public-private partnership by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, a joint venture between Tata Group and Siemens.
Reasons Behind the Delay
There are several reasons for the delay. Some workers returned to their hometowns in West Bengal to vote in elections, which slowed down work. Moreover, global issues like the US-Iran conflict caused shortages of construction materials.
Recent inspections by officials also revealed problems such as water pipeline leakage near Savitribai Phule Pune University Square and incomplete station work. Because of this, the metro will open in phases,12 stations in June and the remaining 11 stations by October.
Commuters Opinions
Commuters are frustrated due to these constant delays. Thousands of people travel daily to Hinjawadi for work, using two-wheelers, cars, buses, or company cabs. Poor road conditions, potholes, and heavy traffic make their journeys long and uncomfortable. During the monsoon, the situation becomes even worse, increasing the risk of accidents and health issues.
