Pune Metro Unveils Phase 2 Plans: Key Studies Underway for Environmental Impact and Construction

Pune Metro is preparing to work on Phase 2 of its project and expects approval from the Union government soon. To avoid delays later, it has begun key studies, including the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Management Plan (EMP), and resettlement and rehabilitation surveys. Phase 2 includes Metro Line 4,

which will run from Khadakwasla to Kharadi through Hadapsar and Swargate, and has been approved by the Maharashtra government and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Another smaller route, called a spur line, is planned from Nal Stop to Manikbaug via Warje.

Pune Metro Constructions To Begin

Pune Metro spokesperson Chandrashekhar Tambekar stated that construction will begin as soon as the Union government gives its clearance. To save time, the necessary paperwork and studies are being completed in advance. Agencies will be appointed to conduct the environmental studies for both the main line and the spur line. Another separate agency will study how people affected by land acquisition should be resettled and compensated. This will help avoid land disputes and ensure smooth construction.

Pune Metro Phase 1 & Phase 2 Extensions

Phase 1 of the Pune Metro is already complete, covering Line 1 from PCMC to Swargate and Line 2 from Vanaz to Ramwadi. Extensions of these lines toward Nigdi, Katraj, Chandni Chowk, and Wagholi are still ongoing. For Phase 2, design work has already started for 14 of the 22 planned stations between Khadakwasla and Kharadi. The state government approved the detailed project report in October 2024. The plan includes a 25.8 km route with 22 stations costing ₹8,131 crore, and a 6 km spur route with six stations costing ₹1,765 crore.

Pune Metro also plans to introduce driverless trains on Phase 2 routes, starting with the Khadakwasla to Kharadi line. Meanwhile, Line 3 from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar is expected to open by March next year.
