Southern Railway has announced the operation of several special trains during the Pongal festival to manage the extra rush of passengers travelling across Tamil Nadu and nearby regions. These special services are being introduced to ensure smoother travel during the festive season.

Special Trains for Pongal
Special trains will run between Nagercoil, Tambaram, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Coimbatore, Podanur, Mangaluru, Erode, Sengottai, and Rameswaram on different dates in January. Many of these trains will operate on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, depending on the route. Most services will run twice, while a few routes will have only one special service.
Tirunelveli-Chengalpattu Special Train
Between Nagercoil, Kanniyakumari, and Tambaram, multiple superfast and express special trains have been scheduled on selected dates to help passengers travelling to and from the southern districts. Similarly, several Tirunelveli-Chengalpattu and Tirunelveli-Chennai Egmore special trains will operate on different days to handle increased demand.
Other Special Trains
To support travel between Coimbatore, Podanur, and Dr MGR Chennai Central, express special trains have been added on multiple dates. Moreover, special services have been announced between Mangaluru Junction and Chennai Central, as well as between Erode and Sengottai, offering better connectivity for long-distance travellers.
Special trains will also operate between Rameswaram and Tambaram, helping pilgrims and festival travellers reach their destinations comfortably. Return services have been planned for most routes to ensure easy travel in both directions.
Southern Railway has informed passengers that reservations for all Pongal special trains will open at 8.00 am on Sunday. Travellers are advised to book tickets early to avoid last-minute inconvenience.
These additional trains are expected to reduce crowding on regular services and provide safe, comfortable, and convenient travel options during the busy Pongal holiday period.
