Bengaluru's Namma Metro has taken a big step forward by issuing the first tenders for construction work under Phase 3 of the project. This marks the beginning of the process to build new metro lines that will greatly expand the city's rail network. Phase 3 adds about 44.45 km of
new routes and includes two major corridors that together will help grow the overall metro network to around 222 km by 2031. There will also be seven interchange stations where passengers can switch between lines more easily.
Tendering Process
The tendering is happening in packages so that different contractors can bid for parts of the work, such as elevated viaducts (sections above the ground), stations, and other civil construction tasks. Work is expected to start soon once contracts are awarded.
Features of Bengaluru's Metro Phase III Project
A key feature of this phase is the inclusion of double-decker structures, where metro tracks are built above flyovers (roads), which helps save space and manage traffic better in busy areas. This will be one of the longest such systems in the city.
The project is also being supported by funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which will provide loans to help pay for construction and training.
Once Phase 3 is complete, it will connect more parts of Bengaluru that currently lack metro service, reduce road traffic, and make daily travel easier for hundreds of thousands of commuters. The 2031 deadline gives more time than originally planned because of delays in planning and tendering, but officials remain committed to finishing the work by then.
