A major development project is set to transform a 6 km stretch of the Ganga channel in Patna, from Digha to the Collectorate. This project aims to turn the silt-filled channel, which currently looks like a drain, into a vibrant and beautiful recreational space. The initiative is led by a committee under the Development Commissioner, showing its importance for the city.
Inspired by Sabarmati Riverfront
The project takes inspiration from the successful Sabarmati Riverfront in Gujarat. Officials plan to introduce exciting amenities such as boating facilities, gardens, and cultural attractions. These changes aim to make the area more appealing to both locals and tourists.
Cleaning the Ganga Channel
At the center of the project is cleaning the Ganga channel and improving its water quality. Drains like Kurji, Rajapur, and Mandiri Nala, along with smaller drains, will be treated using sewage treatment plants (STPs). This will stop pollution and ensure clean water flows continuously through the channel. The focus on cleaning and maintaining the channel will improve the environment and make it a focal point of the city.
Creating Public Spaces
The project will also create various public spaces to cater to different interests. Plans include:
- Gardens and Botanical Spaces: Featuring medicinal plants and flowers.
- Sports Zones: Facilities for cricket, football, volleyball, and basketball.
- Elevated Cycle Tracks: For cycling enthusiasts.
Cultural highlights like the Ganga Dhyan Kendra and Patna Haat will showcase Bihar's rich heritage through educational and shopping experiences. Restaurants, cafes, malls, and open areas for cultural and musical programs will offer leisure and entertainment for all ages.
Managing Floods
To handle flooding, special gates will be installed at the JP Ganga Path underpass. These gates will remain open during normal times but will close during floods to protect the area. This smart planning ensures safety while allowing the new spaces to thrive.
Vision for the Future
Urban Development Minister Nitin Naveen shared that the project follows direct orders from the Chief Minister. Departments are working together to complete the first phase, focusing on the 6 km stretch. The development promises to turn an underutilized area into a lively hub of culture, recreation, and environmental conservation.
The Ganga channel project will rejuvenate Patna's landscape, improving the quality of life for residents while attracting more visitors. By blending infrastructure upgrades with public amenities, this initiative will create a vibrant space for everyone to enjoy.
