Odisha is gearing up for a wet spell over the next four days due to a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that this system will likely intensify into a depression on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

Weather Warnings and Forecasts
The IMD bulletin stated that the well-marked low-pressure area currently lies over the northwest and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal. It is expected to move northwards and strengthen into a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the north Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal coasts on September 8. Following this, it is predicted to travel west-northwest across Gangetic West Bengal, north Odisha, Jharkhand, and adjacent north Chhattisgarh over the next three days.
The state has already seen substantial rainfall in the past 24 hours. Khairmal in Boud district recorded the highest rainfall at 81 mm, followed by Gosani in Gajapati with 79 mm. The Met office has forecast heavy rain (7 cm to 11 cm) at isolated places in Puri, Khurdha, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri within the next 24 hours.
Warnings for Fishermen
Due to the anticipated depression's influence, squally weather with strong surface winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph is expected over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal along and off Odisha coasts from September 8-11. Fishermen are advised against venturing into these areas during this period.
An 'orange' warning (be prepared) has been issued for heavy to very heavy rain at isolated locations in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, and Koraput districts on Sunday. Additionally, a 'yellow' warning (be updated) for heavy rain has been issued for one or two places in Kendrapada, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts on Sunday.
The IMD also predicts rainfall across most parts of Odisha on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. This extended wet spell is likely to affect daily activities and could lead to waterlogging in some areas.
The weather office's advisories aim to prepare residents for potential disruptions caused by heavy rains and strong winds. Keeping abreast of updates from official sources will be crucial during this period.
Residents are urged to stay informed about weather conditions and take necessary precautions as advised by local authorities. The upcoming days will require vigilance as Odisha navigates through this challenging weather phase.
