As winter approaches, bringing dense fog and reduced visibility, the Uttar Pradesh Traffic Police has announced new measures to ensure road safety. Starting December 15, speed limits on the Noida and Yamuna Expressways will be lowered for both light and heavy vehicles. These changes aim to prevent accidents during the foggy season, which creates hazardous driving conditions. The new regulations will remain in effect until February 15, covering the peak winter months when fog and mist are most common.

Recent Incident Highlights the Danger
A tragic incident on November 19 emphasized the need for stricter traffic rules. A speeding bus collided with a stalled truck on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) around 4:30 am, injuring 17 people. The crash was caused by low visibility due to dense fog. This accident underlined the risks of high-speed driving in poor visibility, prompting authorities to implement stricter speed limits on the expressways.
New Speed Limits
To enhance safety, the following speed limits will be enforced:
-Yamuna Expressway:
- Light vehicles: Reduced from 100 km/h to 75 km/h
- Heavy vehicles: Reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h
- Noida Expressway:
- Light vehicles: Reduced from 100 km/h to 75 km/h
- Heavy vehicles: Reduced from 60 km/h to 50 km/h
These changes aim to reduce the chances of accidents during the winter when roads are slippery, and visibility is poor.
Fines for Speeding
Drivers who ignore the new speed limits will face fines:
- Light vehicles: ₹2000
- Heavy vehicles: ₹4000
The fines will be enforced throughout the regulation period, from December 15 to February 15.
Traffic Police's Perspective
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Yamuna Prasad, highlighted the dangers of winter driving. He explained that fog significantly reduces visibility on roads, making driving conditions risky. Additionally, cold weather often makes highways slippery, increasing the chances of accidents. These factors have led to the decision to lower speed limits and enforce stricter penalties.
The decision to lower speed limits on the Noida and Yamuna Expressways is a critical step towards protecting road users during the winter. By adjusting speed limits and imposing fines for violations, authorities aim to reduce the number of accidents caused by foggy and slippery conditions. Drivers are urged to follow the new rules and adapt their driving habits to the season's challenges, ensuring safer journeys for all.
