The Karnataka government has taken a major step to protect its natural beauty and manage the increasing number of tourists by limiting the number of trekkers allowed on popular trekking trails. From now on, only 300 trekkers will be permitted each day at state trekking sites. This decision comes after a huge surge of visitors in January, where Kumara Parvatha saw 6,000 trekkers over a few days. The sudden rush caused chaos, posed safety risks, and damaged the environment.

Introducing an Online Booking System
To ensure a more controlled and enjoyable trekking experience, the government, led by Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre, has launched an online ticket booking system. Through this system, available at [https://aranyavihaara.karnataka.gov.in](https://aranyavihaara.karnataka.gov.in), trekkers can now reserve their spots in advance for various trails. Currently, the system covers five trails, including Kumara Parvatha, Chamarajanagar-Nagamale, and Talacauvery-Nishani Motte. By the end of October, the government plans to expand the system to include bookings for 40 different trekking trails, as well as wildlife and boat safaris in national parks and tiger reserves.
The new booking system aims to make the process fairer by stopping private groups from buying up large numbers of tickets. Trekkers must now upload a government-issued ID to book their tickets. Each phone number can be used to reserve up to 10 tickets, making group bookings easier. There is also a flexible cancellation policy, which offers a full refund if cancellations are made seven days in advance. Late cancellations will result in a partial refund, with a small amount deducted.
Reducing Plastic Waste and Protecting the Environment
Another significant move by the government is its effort to reduce plastic waste on trekking trails. Plastic bottles, bags, and food packaging are now banned on these paths. Trekkers will need to discard plastic items at designated checkpoints before starting their journey. This initiative is part of a larger effort to keep Karnataka's trekking trails clean and safe for nature. In the future, the government plans to introduce inspections and fines for trekkers who violate the ban on plastic.
Sustainable and Informed Trekking
The online booking platform is more than just a ticket system. It also provides detailed information about each trail, including descriptions and photos. This helps trekkers make informed decisions and prepare better for their trips. The goal is to promote eco-tourism while ensuring the natural environment is protected for future generations.
By limiting the number of trekkers and introducing a well-organized booking system, the Karnataka government is taking important steps towards sustainable tourism. These new measures not only help protect nature but also ensure that trekkers have a more enjoyable and responsible experience exploring the state's beautiful landscapes.
