He said the Maharashtra government is focused on creating a sustainable and eco-friendly transport system to meet the growing travel needs of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). According to him, the government has been working on the idea of water transport for the last ten years and has prepared a detailed infrastructure plan for Mumbai.

Mumbai Metro to Sign Memorandum

Fadnavis was speaking after the Maharashtra Maritime Board signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a maritime technology company based in Norway. The agreement aims to bring advanced ferry vessels for the Mumbai Water Metro project and to explore the possibility of setting up shipbuilding facilities in Maharashtra. The chief minister said that proper use of waterways in a crowded city like Mumbai would reduce pressure on existing road and railway transport systems. He added that demand for clean and sustainable water transport is expected to grow across India in the future.

How will this Mumbai Water Metro Benefit Passengers?

The Water Metro project aims to reduce traffic congestion by using coastal routes and creek networks for passenger transport. Fadnavis said the Mumbai model could become an example for other Indian cities to follow.

Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane said the project is an important step for Maharashtra's maritime sector. He added that working with an international company like Hyke would help improve port development, shipbuilding, and maritime skill training in the state.

Preparation of a DPR

According to an official statement, Kochi Metro Rail Limited has prepared a detailed project report for the Mumbai Water Metro project. The report proposes upgrading 24 terminals on 21 existing water routes and building 21 new terminals on 10 additional routes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The release also mentioned that Hyke, which builds modern vessels for urban water transport, has shown interest in establishing shipbuilding units in Maharashtra.
