A project of Rs 383.78 crore for a maintenance depot for Vande Bharat trains at Tatanagar railway station in Jamshedpur has been approved by the Railway Board. The facility is expected to strengthen the maintenance infrastructure for the growing number of Vande Bharat services in the region.
Vande Bharat Maintenance Depot at Tatanagar
Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahato said he was informed about the Railway Board's approval through an official communication from Sumit Kumar, Director (Projects and Development), Railway Board. The Rs 383.78 crore maintenance depot will come up in the Loco Colony area as an extension of Tatanagar's existing coaching depot.
The new facility will be designed to meet the maintenance needs of Vande Bharat trains, aiming to support technical inspections, regular servicing, and rapid washing of the trainsets. The depot will also be capable of handling maintenance work for both Chair Car and Sleeper versions of Vande Bharat trains.
Tatanagar currently operates Vande Bharat services to Patna in Bihar and Berhampur in Odisha. Mahato said the Railway Board approved the depot after reviewing a technical proposal submitted by the Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway. The dedicated facility is expected to strengthen Vande Bharat maintenance arrangements at Tatanagar and help ensure the smooth operation of these services.
In a separate proposal, Mahato has also called for expanding Tatanagar railway station's capacity to handle the growing number of passengers and trains. He has sought the addition of four platforms and a loop line under the PM Gati Shakti scheme.
The proposed station upgrades are aimed at improving Tatanagar's ability to manage increasing passenger and train movement. Together with the new Vande Bharat maintenance depot, the planned infrastructure could further strengthen the station's role in supporting Vande Bharat and other railway services in the region.
