Central Railway has introduced a new daily Express train between Mumbai and Sawantwadi Road to improve direct rail connectivity with South Konkan. The service began with its inaugural run from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The new train is expected to benefit passengers travelling to important destinations such as Kankavli, Kudal and Sawantwadi.

The new service is also expected to support tourism and trade in the region. It will make travel more convenient for people visiting popular destinations such as Sawantwadi, Amboli and Tarkarli. The train can also help strengthen connectivity to tourist areas near the Goa border. Central Railway expects traders and tourists to benefit from the direct daily connection between Mumbai and South Konkan.
The inaugural service was flagged off at 12:50 pm on September 3. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the event, while Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Ashwini Vaishnaw joined the programme through video link.

The inaugural special train is numbered 01001. It departed from CSMT at 12:50 pm and is scheduled to reach Sawantwadi Road at 2 am the following day. On its journey, the train will pass through several important stations. These include Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Pen, Roha, Mangaon, Veer, Khed, Chiplun, Savarda, Aravali Road, Sangameshwar Road, Ratnagiri, Adavali, Valivade, Rajapur Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Nandgaon Road, Kankavli, Sindhudurg and Kudal before reaching Sawantwadi Road.
The train has a combination of AC, sleeper and general-class coaches. Its coach composition includes one AC First Class coach, two AC 2-tier coaches, three AC 3-tier coaches, four sleeper coaches and four general second-class coaches. It will also have one second-seating-cum-guard's brake van and one generator van.
The new CSMT-Sawantwadi service fulfils a long-standing demand for a direct daily train between Mumbai and South Konkan. It is also expected to reduce overcrowding on other Konkan-bound trains operating from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Dadar. However, Central Railway stated that the detailed timings and schedule of trains will be announced later.
