The Mumbai-Goa highway is finally getting closer to completion. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that the project will be finished by June 2025. Once completed, it will reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Goa from 10-12 hours to just 6 hours. This is a big step forward for India's road infrastructure and is expected to boost tourism and economic growth in the Konkan region.

Long Delays but Now on Fast Track
The Mumbai-Goa highway project, also known as National Highway 66, has faced many delays in the past. Problems like land acquisition, legal issues, and poor coordination between departments have slowed down the work. However, Gadkari assured the public that all these issues have now been resolved. The construction work is moving quickly, and the highway is on track to be ready next year.
New Toll System for Smooth Travel
Along with the highway construction, the government is also planning a new way to collect tolls. The current toll booths will be removed, and tolls will be collected automatically using new technology. Vehicles will be tracked by satellites, and toll charges will be taken directly from the vehicle owner's bank account. The toll will be calculated based on how much distance the vehicle travels on the highway.
This new system will use two main technologies: the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. GNSS will track the location of vehicles, while ANPR cameras will read the number plates. This method is similar to how ride-sharing apps charge users based on distance. It will make toll payments faster, easier, and more accurate.
Good News for Konkan Region
According to Gadkari, this new highway will bring major benefits to the Konkan region. With better roads and faster travel, tourism will increase, and local businesses will get more opportunities. It will also help in the overall development of towns and villages along the route.
The Mumbai-Goa highway is one of the most awaited infrastructure projects in the country. When it opens in June 2025, it will cut travel time in half and bring new opportunities for the region. The use of satellite-based toll systems is a major step towards modern and smart road management in India. This project shows how technology and infrastructure can work together to make travel better and easier for everyone.
