Chennai Metro's Phase II project has reached 54.62% physical progress and is expected to improve connectivity across the city significantly. The three corridors are planned to connect Madhavaram with SIPCOT, Lighthouse with Poonamallee Bypass, and Madhavaram with Sholinganallur. Corridor 3 will be the longest, covering 45.8 km, while Corridor 4 will cover 26.1 km and Corridor 5 will extend for 47 km.

How will these New Metro Lines Benefit Chennai and Commuters?

The new lines are expected to improve access to major employment and commercial areas, particularly the IT hubs in southern Chennai. The network will also provide better connections to the airport and several growing suburbs, making daily travel easier for residents.

Construction work is progressing across different parts of the project. Civil works, station construction, tunnelling, track-related activities and other systems are being carried out simultaneously. The project has also achieved several tunnelling milestones as construction continues.

Phase II is being developed at an estimated cost of around Rs 63,246 crore. Once completed, the three corridors will considerably expand Chennai's existing Metro network and provide more public transport options to commuters.

The expansion is expected to help reduce dependence on private vehicles and ease traffic congestion on some of Chennai's busy roads. Better Metro connectivity to residential areas and employment centres could also make commuting more convenient for office workers, students and other passengers.
