Delhi Launches Pink Line with 10 New Stations as Soorghat Remains Closed for Entry-Exit Pending Subway Link

The Delhi Metro's Pink Line, known as the city's first full "ring" metro line, opened to the public on Sunday with 10 new stations. However, one station, Soorghat Metro Station in north Delhi near Wazirabad, is currently not open to passengers. Trains pass through the station without stopping, and announcements

Metro Station with No Entry & Exit

The main reason is that the station does not have a working entry or exit. According to officials from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), passengers will be able to enter and exit the station through a subway that is still under construction. The station is expected to open for public use by the end of the year.

DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal explained that the station was planned to be connected with a subway being built by the Public Works Department (PWD). The project involves two levels of road infrastructure: an elevated flyover above ground for one-way traffic and a subway below ground for traffic moving in the opposite direction. While the flyover has already been completed, the subway construction is still in progress. DMRC is currently carrying out work on the subway after finalising the integration plan with PWD.

Inauguration of Metro Corridors

On Sunday, Narendra Modi inaugurated two new metro corridors in the national capital. These include a 12.3-km stretch from Majlis Park to Maujpur-Babarpur on the Pink Line and a 9.9-km extension of the Magenta Line from Deepali Chowk to Majlis Park. With these additions, the total metro network in the National Capital Region has crossed 400 kilometres. The new Pink Line section also completes a full circular route around Delhi, allowing commuters to travel around the city in a loop, similar to the capital's ring roads.

Commuters' Opinions

However, residents near the closed Soorghat station are disappointed. Many say the station is close to their homes, but cannot be used yet. Some commuters have to walk to the next station or take e-rickshaws, which adds extra time and cost to their daily travel. Locals believe the station should have been fully completed before the line opened to the public.
