Titagarh Rail Systems Limited has received a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for the design, manufacture, supply, and commissioning of 132 metro coaches for Mumbai Metro Line 5. The contract also includes setting up associated systems and providing maintenance services. Mumbai Metro Line

5 will stretch 24.9 km, connecting Thane to Bhiwandi through 15 stations, and will be built in two phases.

MMRDA had floated the tender in 2024, with a completion deadline of 1,825 days (around 5 years). The technical bids were opened on December 17, 2024, with three firms participating. During evaluation on June 24, 2025, one firm's bid was rejected. Later, during financial evaluation on November 10, 2025, another bid was rejected, making Titagarh Rail Systems the lowest bidder. The same day, MMRDA issued the LoA. The Financial bids for Titagarh Rail Systems Limited are ₹2,481 crore, and for Larsen & Toubro Limited, ₹2,994 crore.
Scope of Work
The scope of work includes the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of metro rolling stock, communication-based signalling, train control, telecommunication, platform screen doors, and depot machinery, along with five years of comprehensive maintenance after a two-year defect liability period.
According to the contract, train deliveries will happen in stages:
Phase 1: Prototype in 1.1 years, followed by more trains by 1.85 years.
Phase 2: Deliveries between 3.45 and 3.75 years.
The announcement comes ahead of InnoMetro 2026, a major rail technology exhibition to be held on May 21-22, 2026, in New Delhi.
