Recently, Indian Railways has upgraded the coaches of key trains running between Mangaluru and Chennai to modern LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) coaches. This change is part of efforts to make long-distance travel safer and more comfortable for passengers. LHB coaches are modern train carriages designed to offer better safety features, smoother rides,

and improved comfort compared with older models.
List of Trains
The Mangaluru Central-Dr MGR Chennai Central Superfast Mail and the Mangaluru Central-Dr MGR Chennai Central West Coast Express are two important trains on this route that have been converted to LHB rake sets. These upgrades came into service in early February 2026 from both Mangaluru Central and Chennai Central stations.
Under the updated coach arrangement, the trains now have a set of 22 coaches, which include:
• A combined First AC and AC Two-Tier coach
• One regular AC Two-Tier coach
• Five AC Three-Tier coaches
• Nine Sleeper Class coaches
• Four General Second Class coaches
• One Second Class coach for differently-abled passengers
• One luggage-cum-brake van for baggage and guard duties.
How Will the Upgrade Benefit Passengers?
Railway officials have stressed that the upgrade will help improve the travel experience for passengers who regularly use these busy long-distance services. LHB coaches are lighter, allow higher speeds, and are less prone to derailment during accidents, making journeys safer and more pleasant overall.
Moreover, this move marks a significant step in modernizing railway services on the Mangaluru-Chennai route by replacing older coach designs with modern, more reliable LHB models that passengers prefer for long journeys.
