The Kochi Metro network, which includes the metro rail, the Kochi Water Metro, and electric feeder buses, finished 2025 with record ridership figures, showing that more people are utilising public transport in the city than ever before.
Increased Ridership
In the whole year 2025, over 3.65 crore passengers travelled on the metro rail, a 4.2% increase compared to 2024. This is also about four times more than in 2017, when the metro completed its first year of operation. So far, more than 17.5 crore people have used the metro rail since it began.
Kochi Water Metro
The Water Metro, which links different parts of the city by boat, also saw a big jump in users. In 2025, over 23.26 lakh riders used water metro services, about 15% more than in 2024, and nearly 10 lakh more than in 2023 when the service started. Over the three years since it began, more than 57 lakh passengers have used the Water Metro.
December 2025 was especially busy. Metro and water metro use stayed high throughout the month, and tourist traffic during events like the Kochi-Muziris Biennale helped push up numbers on key routes, such as between High Court and Fort Kochi.
Train Services on New Year's Eve
On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, the network saw one of its highest single-day counts, more than 1.6 lakh passengers using the services when extended hours were offered to handle festive crowds. The Water Metro also set a daily record with over 17,000 riders in late December.
Officials said punctual services, clean trains and boats, good staff behaviour, and strong feeder bus connections helped attract more riders, showing growing trust in Kochi's public transportation system.
