According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is likely from Thursday to May 2 in districts such as Pathanamthitta, Wayanad, Ernakulam, and Alappuzha, which have already received good rainfall in recent days. Yellow alerts, which indicate the possibility of heavy rain in some areas, have been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod on Thursday; Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Wayanad on Friday; and Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Alappuzha on Saturday.

Reason behind the Weather Change

IMD officials stated that this rain marks the end of the recent heatwave and high UV alerts. However, new warnings have been issued for thunderstorms and lightning. These rains are caused by fast-moving storm systems that form over hilly regions and move towards the west. Though these storms usually last only about 30 minutes in one place, they can be quite intense, bringing strong winds and lightning.

Experts explained that due to the earlier heat, these storm clouds grow very tall in the atmosphere, leading to short but heavy rain spells. This pattern of afternoon thunderstorms is expected to continue as weather conditions remain favourable, with winds from the Arabian Sea. Even though the rain has reduced the heat, some areas still experience hot and humid weather. The IMD has advised people to avoid staying in direct sunlight for long periods, especially in the morning, as UV levels can still be high.

Looking ahead, the IMD expects normal to above-normal rainfall in May. However, the overall monsoon from June to September may be below normal due to the possible development of El Niño.
