In the serene backdrop of the Garhwal Himalayas, the revered Kedarnath temple, a significant pilgrimage destination for devotees across the country, has officially closed its gates for the winter season. This year, the temple witnessed an extraordinary influx of over 16.5 lakh pilgrims, who journeyed to offer their prayers. Located at an altitude exceeding 11,000 feet, Kedarnath forms a crucial part of the 12 Jyotirlingas scattered across India, drawing in countless devotees annually.
The closing ceremony, steeped in Vedic rituals, saw more than 18,000 devotees gather at the Himalayan temple to bid farewell to the idol of Lord Shiva for the winter. This elaborate ritual began at the crack of dawn, around 4 am, and the temple doors were sealed by 8.30 am, as stated by Harish Gaur, the media in-charge for the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC). Amidst the chants of "Om Namah Shivay" and "Jai Baba Kedar," coupled with the devotional tunes from the Indian Army band, the atmosphere was imbued with spirituality and devotion.
Celebration Amid Closure
The idol of Lord Shiva was ceremoniously carried out in a palanquin from the temple to the Omkareshwar temple, where it will be worshipped throughout the winter months. This transition is a significant event that marks the seasonal closure of the Kedarnath temple, signifying Lord Shiva's journey to his winter abode. The procession, accompanied by devotional music and the fervent prayers of the devotees, underscores the deep-rooted spiritual tradition that surrounds this annual event.
Ajendra Ajay, the chairman of BKTC, highlighted the overwhelming turnout this season, with the temple hosting over 16.5 lakh visitors. The temple, renowned for its spiritual significance and breathtaking location, closes during winter as it becomes enveloped in snow, making it inaccessible to pilgrims. This time of the year is marked by a symbolic gesture where the deity is moved to a different location, ensuring that the worship continues unabated despite the harsh weather conditions.
