Jammu and Kashmir Launches Free Bus Travel for Women and Schoolgirls

In a step towards gender equality and better accessibility, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has introduced the Zero-Ticket Travel Initiative in Jammu and Kashmir. This new scheme allows women to travel for free on buses across the region. The launch event was held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), marking an important moment in improving transportation options for women. By offering free travel on Smart City e-buses and Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) buses, the government has fulfilled a key promise made in the Budget announcement.

Making Transportation Safer and Easier for Women

At the launch event, Omar Abdullah spoke about how this initiative is not just about free travel but also about making transportation safer and more accessible for women. "Starting today, women across Jammu and Kashmir will travel free in all Smart City and SRTC buses. This isn't just about affordability; it's about accessibility, safety, and creating an environment where women feel empowered to travel freely," he said. The government aims to remove mobility barriers that might stop women from accessing education, work, or other important activities.

To show special support for young female students, the government introduced free travel for schoolgirls even before the main event. This decision highlights the commitment to making transportation easier for young students, helping them continue their studies without worrying about travel costs.

Ensuring Financial Sustainability

Some people were concerned about how this scheme would affect the transport services financially. However, Omar Abdullah assured that there would be no financial loss to JKRTC and Smart City buses. The government has planned to cover the costs through the state budget. "SRTC will not be affected, nor will the Smart City buses. The zero tickets will be compensated through the Budget," he confirmed after the event.

The Zero-Ticket Travel Initiative was launched on March 7 as part of the CM's Budget Speech. It is one of several measures introduced to support women and economically weaker sections of society. By removing travel costs, the government is making it easier for women to move around for education, jobs, shopping, and other activities.

This initiative represents a big step towards making public transport more inclusive and empowering for women in Jammu and Kashmir. By offering free travel and ensuring financial support for transport operators, the government is working towards a more equal and accessible society for all.
