Patna Opens Gandhi Ghat Charging Station as Electric Ferry Network on NW1 Takes Shape

Work on the Patna Water Metro has started with the opening of a charging station at Gandhi Ghat on the Ganga River. This facility marks the first step in building infrastructure for an electric ferry service as part of Patna's larger river transport plan.

Patna Metro Project

The project is being implemented by the Inland Waterways Authority of India and is part of the development of National Waterway 1 (NW1). The goal of this initiative is to improve transport and connectivity through inland waterways in the region. The new charging station will provide shore power and maintenance support for battery-powered ferries that will operate on the river.

Electric Ferries in Patna

These electric ferries will run on fixed routes across the river, giving residents and visitors a cleaner and more convenient travel option. The plan is expected to reduce dependence on road transport and help ease traffic congestion in the city. Officials believe electric ferries will also reduce pollution and operating costs compared to traditional diesel boats. In addition, they will be quieter and could offer more frequent trips across the river.

Facility at Gandhi Ghat

The facility at Gandhi Ghat will include floating pontoons for ferry docking, electrical systems for the vessels, and basic facilities for crew members. These features will help support the early stages of ferry operations.

Authorities also plan to connect the water transport system with existing city transport networks. The aim is to coordinate ferry schedules with buses, taxis, and other services to make travel easier for commuters. This integration is expected to improve last-mile connectivity and encourage more people to use waterways for their daily commute.

Job Creation

Apart from improving passenger transport, the project is expected to create local job opportunities in ferry operations, maintenance, and infrastructure management. Experts say that if the pilot project is successful, similar facilities could be developed along other parts of National Waterway 1. Officials will continue monitoring the service and make improvements as operations expand.
