Although Indian Railways launched India's first hydrogen-powered train in July 2026, the train has reportedly seen low passenger demand, with a count of 40-60 passengers travelling daily. The eco-friendly train currently operates on an 89-kilometre route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, with a seating capacity of around 2,600 passengers.
India's Hydrogen-powered Train Extension to Delhi
To increase passenger numbers and make better use of the service, Indian Railways is planning to extend the hydrogen train to Azadpur Station in Delhi, located near the wholesale fruit and vegetable market. However, the final decision on the extension has not yet been taken.
The train was initially planned to make two trips a day when it was launched in July 2026. Due to the low passenger turnout, it is currently making only one trip daily. A team of experts is reportedly monitoring the train's operations and trial runs towards Delhi.
According to the report, the hydrogen train has been operating successfully for the last two months despite low passenger traffic. Before deciding on the extension, authorities are examining technological aspects and passenger safety. The hydrogen train can travel around 250 to 300 kilometres on a full tank. Since the distance between Jind and Delhi is about 130 kilometres, the train can cover the route on a single full tank.
Extension Project to Bring Challenges
However, extending the service to Delhi could present challenges. The hydrogen train has 10 coaches and can carry around 2,600 passengers. In comparison, trains operating from Delhi often need 18 to 20 coaches to accommodate larger crowds. Therefore, Indian Railways will have to consider operational, technological, and safety factors before finalising the proposed extension.
