Indian Railways is considering a major change to its train schedule by merging the Mumbai-Goa and Mangaluru-Goa Vande Bharat routes into a single service from Mumbai to Mangaluru. If implemented, this new route will reduce travel time to approximately 12 hours, offering a faster and more efficient journey for passengers. The plan aims to improve connectivity while ensuring better use of railway resources.

Proposed Schedule for the New Route
Currently, the Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat Express leaves Mumbai at 5.25 am and reaches Goa by 1.10 pm. The proposed change will extend this journey to Mangaluru, with an expected arrival time of 6.00 pm.
Similarly, the return journey from Mangaluru is expected to start at 8.30 am, reaching Goa at 1.10 pm and continuing to Mumbai with an estimated arrival time of 9.00 pm. This direct service will benefit passengers traveling between Mumbai and Mangaluru, making their journey quicker and more convenient.
Challenges in Implementing the New Plan
Despite the benefits, there are challenges to merging these routes. One major issue is platform congestion in Mumbai, especially during evening hours when multiple long-distance trains arrive. Managing train schedules without causing delays will require careful planning by Indian Railways.
Additionally, the Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat train, which initially had an occupancy rate of 90%, has seen a drop to around 70%. The railway authorities hope that by extending the route to Mangaluru, demand will increase, leading to full occupancy and better service efficiency.
Concerns from Local Groups
Not everyone supports this proposed change. The Konkan Vikas Samithi, a Mumbai-based organization, had earlier opposed merging the Mangaluru-Madgaon and Mumbai CSMT-Madgaon Vande Bharat services. They argued that it could reduce seat availability for passengers traveling between Mumbai and Madgaon. Balancing the interests of different passenger groups will be an important factor in finalizing the plan.
The proposal to introduce a direct Mumbai to Mangaluru Vande Bharat service is part of Indian Railways' efforts to enhance connectivity and travel efficiency. If successfully implemented, this change will reduce travel time, offer a more convenient option for passengers, and improve train utilization. However, the railway authorities will need to address scheduling concerns and passenger demands before moving forward with the final decision.
Passengers can look forward to an improved and streamlined travel experience if the plan becomes a reality.
