Indian Railways' Lower Berth Rule Benefits Millions; What You Need to Know

Indian Railways has introduced a new rule to make train travel more comfortable for senior citizens, pregnant women, and disabled passengers. This new rule allows these groups to book lower berths, ensuring easier access and a more pleasant journey.

Indian Railways Lower Berth Rule

This new rule ensures that vulnerable passengers have easier access to lower berths, which reduces the need to climb up to upper berths. This makes train travel more comfortable and convenient for them. The rule applies to all types of trains, including Mail/Express trains, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto trains. It covers all classes of train travel, including Sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, and 1AC.

Benefits and Convenience

Passengers who are 60 years and older can now book lower berths. Pregnant women can also book lower berths for a more comfortable journey. Disabled passengers are now eligible to book lower berths. Indian Railways has ensured that lower berths are allocated closer to washrooms and exits, adding extra convenience for senior citizens, pregnant women, and disabled passengers.

How to Book Lower Berths

Passengers can select the "Lower Berth" option while booking tickets online through the IRCTC website. This option is also available at railway reservation counters. Passengers need to mention their requirement for a lower berth during booking.

Impact and Benefits

According to Sacchi Sewa, the new rule has already benefited many people. Over 4 crore (40 million) senior citizens have benefited from this rule. More than 1.5 lakh (150,000) pregnant women have availed of the lower berth facility. Over 1 lakh (100,000) disabled passengers have found the rule beneficial.

Making Train Travel Inclusive

The introduction of this new rule by Indian Railways is a significant step towards improving the travel experience for senior citizens, pregnant women, and disabled passengers. It ensures that these passengers have a more comfortable and accessible journey, making train travel more inclusive for everyone.

Eligibility Criteria

Men over 60 and women over 58 can book lower berths. Pregnant women need to submit a medical certificate at the time of booking. Divyang passengers can book tickets under the Divyangjan Quota, which reserves lower and middle berths in the same cabin.

This move by Indian Railways aims to make train travel more inclusive and comfortable for all passengers, especially those who need extra care and attention. By providing lower berths, the railway service is ensuring that everyone can travel with ease. If you have any specific questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask!
