IMD Red Alert: Pune, Palghar, Satara Bracing For Extreme Weather IMD Warns Of Heavy Rains In Maharashtra

The India Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts for severe weather in various districts, including Pune, Palghar, and Satara, signaling heavy rains on August 4.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune, Palghar, and Satara districts, warning of severe weather on August 4. An orange alert is also in place for Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Nashik due to expected heavy rainfall.

Heavy rains have returned to Pune after a brief dry spell. The IMD spokesperson stated, "The recent lull in rainfall has ended as heavy rains have returned today. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a 'red alert' has been issued for Pune, Palghar, and Satara for August 4 due to anticipated extreme weather conditions. Additionally, an 'orange alert' has been declared for Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Nashik, indicating the likelihood of heavy rain."

Impact on Dams

The catchment areas of Khadakwasla, Pavana, Mulshi, and Chasakman dams in Pune have received significant rainfall. This has led to the dams reaching full capacity and necessitating large-scale water discharge.

Mumbai experienced cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain on Sunday morning. The IMD forecasts that these conditions will persist with more heavy showers expected later. Following yesterday's downpour, today's forecast prompted an upgrade from a yellow to an orange alert in the city and surrounding regions.

Weather Alerts Across India

The intense weather is not confined to Maharashtra. Jharkhand is also under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in seven districts. A low-pressure system affecting various regions is predicted to bring heavy rains to Bihar, Jharkhand, South Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra and East Madhya Pradesh.

West Madhya Pradesh should prepare for extremely heavy rain on August 3 and 4. Similar conditions are expected in Gujarat, Konkan and Goa. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated in East Madhya Pradesh as well as West Madhya Pradesh. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in several other parts of the country.

Broader Weather Forecast

The IMD's forecast extends beyond Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Punjab and Haryana are likely to witness significant rainfall today. A red alert has been issued for Madhya Pradesh (MP), Uttar Pradesh (UP), and Rajasthan.

This widespread weather pattern highlights the need for preparedness across multiple states. Residents are advised to stay updated with local weather reports and take necessary precautions.

As the monsoon season progresses, these alerts serve as crucial warnings for potential flooding and other weather-related hazards. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.
