The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Wayanad and other northern districts of Kerala due to ongoing heavy rains. Landslides have already affected Wayanad, and the forecast indicates more extreme rainfall. The red alert signifies over 20 cm of rain in 24 hours.

Train services in northern Kerala have been severely disrupted by flooding and fallen trees. At least 10 trains were either fully or partially rescheduled. For instance, the '16305' Ernakulam - Kannur Intercity Express was short terminated at Thrissur, while the '16791' Tirunelveli - Palakkad Palaruvi Express ended at Aluva.
Heavy Rainfall Alerts
In addition to Wayanad, the IMD has issued red alerts for Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, Idukki, and Thrissur. An orange alert is in place for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam districts. Orange alerts indicate very heavy rain between 11 cm and 20 cm.
Due to the severe weather predictions, authorities in Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod have declared holidays for all educational institutions including professional colleges.

Impact on Transportation
The '16302' Thiruvananthapuram - Shoranur Venad Express will terminate at Chalakkudy. Additionally, the Guruvayur - Thrissur Daily Express and Shoranur - Thrissur Daily Express have been cancelled. The Kannur-Thiruvananthapuram Central Janshatabdi Express will end at Shoranur Junction.
The official death toll from landslides in Wayanad has risen to 123. This number includes children and women. Around 128 people are currently hospitalised with many others stranded as heavy rains continue to batter the region.
An orange alert has also been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod for Wednesday. This means these areas should expect very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm.
