Hyderabad: Rising temperatures across Telangana have triggered a sharp increase in electricity consumption, with Hyderabad alone accounting for nearly 45% of the state's total power usage, according to official data from the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL).

The state's average daily power demand is currently estimated at around 10,000 MW, down slightly from the peak of 11,300 MW recorded during the recent Rabi season. However, officials note that demand is climbing again as summer intensifies. Within this, Greater Hyderabad's consumption stands at approximately 4,300 MW, and is expected to rise further to 5,500 MW in the coming weeks if temperatures continue to soar.
Heatwave Driving Demand
Telangana is currently experiencing extreme heat conditions, with temperatures ranging between 43°C and 46°C, and several districts under red alert. In Hyderabad, temperatures are already touching 42.5°C to 44°C, with forecasts indicating further increases.
The surge in electricity demand is primarily linked to increased use of cooling appliances, particularly air conditioners and refrigerators. Officials also point to a growing dependence on electricity due to higher usage of electric appliances and a gradual rise in electric vehicle adoption, which is adding to the load on the grid.
High-Consumption Zones in Hyderabad
Within Greater Hyderabad, certain regions are consuming a significantly larger share of electricity due to dense infrastructure and commercial activity. Key high-demand areas include:
Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur and Kokapet - These IT and commercial hubs fall under the city's cyber corridor and account for nearly 25% of total urban consumption due to office spaces, data centres, and residential complexes.
Rajendranagar and Medchal zones - Together contributing close to 30% of the load, these areas have seen rapid residential expansion along with industrial activity.
Emerging urban clusters and new residential layouts are also contributing to the steady rise in electricity usage.
Infrastructure Prepared to Handle Load
Despite the surge, power officials maintain that the system is equipped to manage the increasing demand. TGSPDCL has readied nearly 5,000 distribution transformers to address potential overload situations. In addition, several transformers previously operating above 70% capacity have been upgraded to higher-capacity units.
The city's 33/11 kV substations have also been strengthened with enhanced infrastructure, including 16 MVA high-capacity transformers, ensuring stable supply even during peak demand hours.
Officials further indicated that contingency measures are in place to prevent outages, even if demand spikes suddenly during extreme weather conditions.
Outlook
With summer yet to peak, Hyderabad's electricity consumption is expected to remain high in the coming weeks. Authorities have urged residents to use power judiciously while assuring that no major power disruptions are anticipated under the current preparedness levels.
The rising demand underscores the growing energy needs of a rapidly expanding urban centre, where climate conditions and lifestyle shifts continue to influence consumption patterns.
