Hyderabad Airport Introduces Sunflower Programme For Hidden Disabilities

GMR Hyderabad International Airport introduces the 'Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme' to support passengers with conditions like autism, dementia, or hearing loss, making travel more inclusive.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited has introduced the 'Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme' to enhance travel for those with hidden disabilities. This initiative aims to support individuals with conditions like low vision, autism, dementia, intellectual disabilities, or hearing loss, which are not immediately visible.

The programme allows passengers with such hidden disabilities to discreetly signal their need for assistance by wearing a sunflower lanyard. This globally recognised lanyard indicates that the wearer may need extra help, patience, or time. However, it does not provide expedited services like fast-tracking through security.

Advance Assistance Requests

Passengers can share their travel details in advance via an online form or seek help on the day of travel at the airport's Information desk. The staff will assist them with the digital form if needed. This ensures that their needs are communicated effectively and timely.

All personnel at passenger interaction points have received training under this programme. This includes staff at information desks, check-in counters, security checkpoints, immigration, customs, retail outlets, and boarding gates. The training ensures they are equipped to provide the necessary support to passengers wearing the sunflower lanyard.

A release from GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited stated that while the lanyard helps communicate the need for additional assistance, it does not guarantee faster processing through security or other services.

This initiative is a significant step towards making air travel more inclusive and accommodating for individuals with hidden disabilities. By recognising and addressing these needs discreetly, the airport aims to create a more supportive environment for all passengers.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme reflects a growing awareness and commitment to inclusivity in public spaces. It highlights the importance of understanding and supporting those whose disabilities may not be immediately apparent but still require consideration and assistance.

Overall, this programme is expected to significantly improve the travel experience for many passengers who might otherwise face challenges due to their hidden disabilities. It underscores the airport's dedication to providing a welcoming and accessible environment for everyone.
