Long after the cheers fade at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium, the economic impact of international cricket continues to reverberate across Dharamshala. Hotels fill up, restaurants witness a spike in footfall, taxis stay occupied and local businesses see a surge in activity - underscoring how sport has become an increasingly important driver of tourism and livelihoods in the region.
The recently concluded India-Afghanistan ODI on June 13 offered yet another example of how marquee cricket fixtures are contributing to the local economy. Coming on the heels of a successful IPL season, the international match attracted thousands of visitors to the hill town, strengthening Dharamshala's emergence as one of India's leading sports tourism destinations.
What makes Dharamshala unique is the combination of world-class sporting infrastructure and its picturesque setting against the Dhauladhar ranges. For many visitors, cricket has become the starting point of a broader travel experience, with tourists extending their stays to explore nearby destinations and local culture.
The city's hospitality sector has been among the biggest beneficiaries. Hotels and guest houses witnessed a substantial increase in bookings ahead of the fixtures, while restaurants, transport operators and small businesses reported higher demand, highlighting the multiplier effect generated by sporting events.
At the centre of this transformation is the HPCA Stadium, which has steadily established itself among the country's premier cricket venues. The ODI itself demonstrated the venue's operational capabilities. After more than fourteen hours of relentless rain, ground staff restored the outfield to match-ready condition within thirty minutes, aided by the advanced SIS Air vacuum drainage system - technology available at only a handful of cricket grounds worldwide.
The fan experience extended beyond the match. HPCA's drone show, featuring visuals celebrating cricket, patriotism and Himachal Pradesh's cultural heritage, added to the festive atmosphere and reinforced the growing convergence of sport, entertainment and tourism.
The evolution of Dharamshala into an international cricket destination has been a long-term project. Under the leadership of former HPCA President and Member of Parliament Anurag Singh Thakur, the venue has hosted ICC tournaments, IPL fixtures and bilateral matches, bringing global attention to the region and helping create opportunities for local communities.
"Our vision was to make Dharamshala a global cricketing destination while showcasing Himachal Pradesh to the world. Today, every major cricket event strengthens the region's sporting legacy, boosts tourism, and creates economic opportunities for local communities," said Anurag Singh Thakur.
Recognition for HPCA's efforts came recently with the IPL 2026 Pitch & Ground Award, reflecting the emphasis placed on infrastructure and match-day excellence. Alongside hosting elite cricket, the association has also invested in talent development and the promotion of women's cricket.
As India increasingly looks at sports as a catalyst for economic growth and destination branding, Dharamshala offers a compelling example of how international fixtures can generate benefits far beyond the stadium - transforming a mountain town into a thriving hub where tourism, hospitality and cricket have become deeply intertwined.
