Chennai is experiencing heavy rainfall as Cyclone Fengal approaches the Tamil Nadu coast. The cyclone is expected to make landfall near the city, bringing significant disruption.

Red Alert Issued
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Chennai and nearby districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Cyclone Fengal is forecast to make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the afternoon of November 30.
Impact on Daily Life
The cyclone has already affected schools, transport, and other services:
- School Closures: Schools and colleges in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts are closed to ensure the safety of students.
- Transport Suspension: Public transport services on East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) will be stopped starting Saturday afternoon.
- Flight Disruptions: At Chennai International Airport, 18 flights to and from the city have been canceled.
Relief Efforts
The Tamil Nadu government has made preparations to minimize the impact of Cyclone Fengal:
- Relief Centers: A total of 2,229 relief centers have been set up.
- Evacuations: In Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, 471 people from 164 families have been moved to relief camps.
- Rain Relief Workers: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has deployed 28,000 workers for rain-related emergencies. Additional staff are assigned to each ward to handle complaints.
