The World Bank has approved a revised loan proposal of ₹1,409 crore for Phase 2 of the Gurugram Metro project. The proposal was submitted in June and is now under evaluation by senior officials of Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) and the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC). Once the tender is approved, the bidding process will begin.
Gurugram Metro Phase II Project
The second phase will cover a 13-km metro corridor between Sector 9 and Cyber Hub. The revised tender mainly includes civil construction work such as laying metro tracks, building stations and constructing some double-decker sections. However, traction- and design-related work has been removed because the World Bank loan does not cover the project's full estimated requirement of around ₹2,700 crore.
Gurugram Metro Phase II Stations
The corridor will have 14 stations. These will include Sector 7, Sector 4, Sector 5, Ashok Vihar, Sector 3, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar Extension, Palam Vihar, Sector 23A, Sector 22, Udyog Vihar Phase 4, Udyog Vihar Phase 5 and Cyber City. A separate spur will also connect the metro network with Gurugram railway station.
How will Gurugram's New Corridor Benefit Passengers?
The new corridor is expected to improve connectivity across several residential, commercial and industrial areas of Gurugram. It will also provide interchange facilities with the existing Rapid Metro and the Namo Bharat Rail corridor, making it easier for commuters to travel between different parts of the city.
Work related to the project has already started at some locations. Metro girders, each measuring 28 metres, are being prepared at a casting yard in Sector 33. These girders will later be installed using heavy cranes. Land acquisition around Islampur and Basai is also being expedited for the proposed metro depot and station.
Officials have stated that the project is a high-priority initiative and efforts are being made to complete it within the planned timeline. A high-level meeting in Chandigarh is also expected to review the project's progress.
