An expert panel has suggested building a memorial in Goa to honour temples destroyed during Portuguese rule. They also propose a museum to display the state's ancient temple heritage, according to a report presented in the legislative assembly. Goa Archaeology Minister Subhash Phal Desai announced on Monday that his department is searching for a suitable location for this memorial. He shared the committee's report, which was part of his response to an unstarred question in the House.

Recommendations from the Expert Committee
The committee, formed in 2023, highlighted that over 1,000 temples were demolished by Portuguese rulers. They recommended constructing a "temple memorial" (smarak devalaya) in areas like Salcette (South Goa), Bardez, and Tiswadi (both North Goa), which experienced significant temple destruction.
"As per the recommendation of the expert committee, the department is in communication with the Department of Goa Gazetteer and Historical Records for translation of related books in English to facilitate further research," said Phal Desai.
Preserving Archaeological Evidence
The panel noted that many archaeological remains are scattered across villages once rich in temple culture. These remains are currently neglected. The committee stressed that modernisation is causing a rapid loss of ancient temple heritage.
The members urged the government to establish a museum dedicated exclusively to showcasing Goa's ancient temples. They also suggested creating schemes for both minor and major projects to encourage research on these temples.
Encouraging Research and Education
To support further study, the minister mentioned that his department has launched an archaeological research fellowship scheme at junior and senior levels. This initiative aims to foster academic interest in Goa's temple history.
The committee's recommendations aim to preserve and promote awareness of Goa's rich temple heritage. By implementing these suggestions, they hope to protect historical sites and encourage scholarly research.
