Mount Merapi in Indonesia erupted on Saturday, 11th March 2023 with avalanches of blistering gas clouds and lava, causing authorities to halt tourism & mining activities on the volcano's slopes. Merapi, located on the densely populated Indonesian island of Java, emitted clouds of hot ash as well as a mixture of rock, lava, and gas that travelled up to 7 kilometres down its slopes.
According to the National Disaster Management Agency's spokesperson, Abdul Muhari, a column of heated clouds surged 100 metres into the air.

Mount Merapi, while being among the world's most dangerous volcanoes, still is also a popular tourist destination. Mount Merapi, as well as other volcanoes such as Mount Semeru & Mount Bromo, remain popular adventure destinations in Indonesia.
Mount Merapi has spectacular hiking trails that reach the peak. The most famous hike around here is the sunrise hike. The sight from the top is breathtaking. This, together with the exhilaration of climbing a volcano, is why adventurers flock to this location.
Past Volcanic eruptions:
Merapi is the most active of Indonesia's more than 120 active volcanoes, and it has lately erupted with lava & gas clouds several times. Its most recent significant eruption killed 347 individuals and displaced 20,000 villages in 2010.

Indonesia, an island where about 270 million people lives is prone to earthquakes & volcanic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ocean's "Ring of Fire," a horseshoe-shaped sequence of seismic fault lines. Mount Semeru, Java's highest volcano, erupted in December 2021, killing 48 people and leaving 36 missing.
