Work on Corridor-2 of the Patna Metro has reached an important phase, with tunnelling work starting between the PMCH station and Gandhi Maidan. This stage is crucial as it covers one of the busiest and most crowded parts of the city.
First Tunnel Boring Machine
According to local reports, the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) has already begun digging and has completed around 20 metres of the tunnel. At the same time, preparations are being made to bring in a second TBM to speed up the work. Officials said the second machine is expected to start operating within the next few days.
Underground Metro Route in Patna
The underground metro route will run from Moin-ul-Haq Stadium and pass through major locations such as Patna University, PMCH, Gandhi Maidan, and Akashvani, before ending at Patna Junction. This section is considered the backbone of the Patna Metro project because it connects several key areas that see heavy traffic and large numbers of commuters every day.
When Did the First TBM Reach?
Earlier, the tunnel boring machines had completed a 1,480-metre-long tunnel between Moin-ul-Haq Stadium and Patna University. After this stretch, the machines were temporarily taken out for maintenance. Due to a three-month break, engineers introduced special tunnelling techniques to work in sensitive zones safely. The first TBM reached the PMCH station area on November 10, and the second arrived about a month later. This cleared the way for tunnelling to restart on the next section.
The 1.35-km stretch between PMCH and Gandhi Maidan is seen as one of the most difficult parts of the project. The tunnel passes under densely populated areas, and engineers must closely monitor soil conditions, nearby heritage buildings, and road traffic above to ensure safety and prevent any damage during construction.
