Chennai Phase-2 Metro Nears CMRS Inspection as Seven Stations Await Opening by Mid-2026

The 14.5-kilometre Phase-2 metro rail stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani is almost ready and will soon undergo final inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). This inspection is required before the line can be opened for passenger services, which is planned for February. However, commuters may not

be able to use at least seven stations between Porur Junction and Saligramam immediately, as construction work and passenger facilities at these stations are still incomplete.

Opening of Seven Stations

Officials said these seven stations will be opened in stages before mid-2026. The stretch has a total of seven stations, out of which four are double-decker stations spread across a 4-kilometre section. When services begin next month, driverless metro trains will skip these unfinished stations and run directly up to Vadapalani. From there, passengers can use the existing skywalk to change to the Phase-1 metro line and travel towards the airport, Chennai Central, or Egmore.

Stations between Porur and Poonamallee

On Wednesday, workers were seen getting the Vadapalani station ready by preparing the skywalk and entry points. At the same time, stations between Porur and Poonamallee Bypass were being given final finishing touches. A metro official said that the remaining stations would be opened one by one before June 2026, which was the original deadline.

Double-Decker Stations

The stations yet to open include the double-decker stations at Alapakkam, Karambakkam, Valsaravakkam, and Alwarthirunagar, along with Saligramam Warehouse and Saligramam stations. This 14.5-kilometre stretch is part of the longer 26.1-kilometre Corridor-4, which runs from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass.

Chennai Metro Trial Runs

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) started trial runs on the Porur-Poonamallee section in 2025 and later on the Vadapalani-Porur section in January 2026. CMRS has already inspected the driverless trains, while checks on tracks, viaducts, signalling systems and station facilities are still pending. After completing inspections, CMRS will submit its report to the Railway Board. Once approval is given, the Centre and state governments will decide the official opening date. Opening the line up to Vadapalani earlier will help connect Phase-2 with Phase-1, making travel across the city easier for passengers.
