For long-distance services to southern Tamil Nadu, the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) at Kilambakkam is a major departure point. The TNSTC reservation system lists services connecting Chennai with several important destinations, including Madurai, Tiruchy, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Kumbakonam, Theni, Rameswaram and Tiruchendur. A broader southern route corridor starts from Chennai/KCBT, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Tiruchy, Madurai, Tirunelveli to Nagercoil/Kanniyakumari.
Depending on the service, buses may also operate towards destinations such as Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Thoothukudi and Tiruchendur.

Passengers travelling home for Deepavali are advised to plan their return journey early. If the return date has entered the advance-booking window, passengers can book their return tickets along with their onward journey. This can be particularly useful for popular Chennai-bound routes from southern districts, where demand can increase sharply around the festival.
For example, a passenger travelling from Chennai on November 6 and returning on November 10 should check the availability for November 10 as soon as that date becomes eligible for booking.
